Terms of service

Last updated: October 22, 2026

Template – not yet final

This document is a template. The company name and address ([COMPANY NAME, ADDRESS]), the contact address (privacy@example.com) and every other value in square brackets must be completed, and the text must be reviewed by a qualified lawyer, before launch.

These terms of service govern your use of the QR & Barcode Scanner mobile app and this website (together, the “service”), with or without an account. The service is provided by [COMPANY NAME, ADDRESS] (“we”, “us”).

How we handle personal data is explained in our privacy policy.

1.Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2.The service

QR & Barcode Scanner is a scanner for QR codes and barcodes with ingredient, allergen and additive information, family profiles stored on your device, a home pantry with expiry reminders, a shopping list and a QR code generator. Basic features are free and the free version shows ads. A paid plan (Standard or Premium) is a subscription with higher limits, more features and no ads.

We continuously develop the service and may add, change or remove features. We will not remove essential features of a paid plan during a running billing period without offering a fair alternative or a pro-rata refund.

3.Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old (or the lower age of digital consent in your country, but at least 13) to create an account. [Lawyer: minimum age for using the app without an account.]

4.Accounts and security

  • Provide accurate information and keep it up to date.
  • Keep your password confidential and do not share your account.
  • You are responsible for all activity under your account.
  • Tell us immediately at support@example.com if you suspect unauthorised access.

5.Subscriptions and payment

Personal plans: Standard and Premium (App Store and Google Play)

  • Paid plans are purchased and billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The terms of the respective store apply to payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period in your store account settings.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their refund policies. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • Prices are shown in the app before you buy and may vary by store and country.
  • If a free trial is offered for a plan, it is shown in the app before you subscribe. The paid subscription starts automatically when the trial ends, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
  • There are two paid plans, Standard and Premium. Each removes the ads and raises the limits of the free version (for example the number of pantry items, family profiles, history entries, QR codes and AI label readings). Premium has the higher limits. The current limits are shown in the app and on our website.
  • Standard and Premium are for personal, non-commercial use in your household. Using them to run a shop, a warehouse or another business is not allowed; the Business plan is intended for that.

Consumer rights

If you are a consumer, you keep all rights that the mandatory law of your country grants you, including any statutory right of withdrawal. Where the law allows, you agree that the digital service starts immediately and acknowledge that you may lose the right of withdrawal once it has started. For purchases in the App Store or Google Play, the store's rules on withdrawal and refunds also apply.

6.Ads

The free version of the app shows ads from Google AdMob. A paid plan removes them. Ads are provided by third parties; we do not endorse the advertised products and are not responsible for them. How ads use data is explained in the privacy policy.

7.Acceptable use

You must not:

  • use the service in breach of any law or the rights of others;
  • attack, probe, overload or circumvent the security of the service;
  • copy or extract product data or other content on a large scale by automated means, except through an API we provide for this purpose;
  • upload content that is unlawful or infringes the rights of others;
  • upload photos that show people or personal documents, or other personal data of third parties without a legal basis;
  • resell, sublicense or provide the service to third parties without our written permission;
  • reverse engineer the app except where the law expressly permits it.

We may remove content and suspend accounts that violate these rules.

8.Products you add yourself

Products you save for yourself stay on your device; we do not publish them. If you add a product to Open Food Facts, you do so on their website under their terms and open licences. Information you enter yourself is shown to you as entered; we do not check it.

9.Product data from third parties

Most product information comes from Open Food Facts and its sister projects, provided under the Open Database License (ODbL). We copy this data into our own database and update it regularly, so it can be out of date. Products you add yourself show only what you entered, and AI label reading can make mistakes. Manufacturers change recipes and labels, and databases can contain errors. We do not guarantee that product information is complete, correct or up to date.

10.Medical disclaimer

QR & Barcode Scanner is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. It is not a substitute for professional advice from a doctor, dietitian or pharmacist.

The app is intended only to show general information from product labels and public sources. It is not intended to diagnose, prevent, monitor, treat or alleviate any disease or condition.

If you or a family member has an allergy or intolerance, always read the ingredient list and allergen information on the package itself before buying or eating a product. Never rely on the app alone.

Ratings, warnings, additive information and age-specific notes are based on labels and public sources. The analysis can be incomplete or wrong – for example because of missing data, recipe changes, cross-contamination or text recognition errors.

Information for pregnancy, infants, children or health conditions is general. Ask a healthcare professional about your individual situation.

11.Expiry tracking and food safety

  • Expiry dates and reminders are aids. Dates that are scanned or read from photos can be wrong – always check them against the label.
  • Reminders and notifications can be delayed or not delivered, for example because of device settings, missing connectivity or third-party services.

12.AI label reading

AI label reading needs an account. Your photo is processed by our AI provider as described in the privacy policy. Text read by AI can contain errors: check ingredients, allergens and dates against the label before relying on them. The number of readings per month depends on your plan and is shown in the app; unused readings do not carry over.

13.Availability

We aim to keep the service available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. Maintenance, updates, failures of third-party services or events beyond our control can cause interruptions. Offline features of the app continue to work without a connection. Service levels apply only if agreed separately in writing.

14.Intellectual property

The service, including the app, software, design and brand, belongs to us or our licensors. We grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service for its intended purpose while these terms apply. Open product data remains subject to its respective open licences. If you send us feedback, we may use it without obligation to you.

15.Third-party services

The service works with third-party services such as the Apple App Store, Google Play, Sign in with Apple, Google sign-in, RevenueCat, Google AdMob and Open Food Facts. Their own terms apply to your use of them, and we are not responsible for them.

16.Termination

  • You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time, in the app or as described on our account deletion page. Paid subscriptions must be cancelled separately in your App Store or Google Play account.
  • We may suspend or terminate your access with reasonable notice, or immediately in the case of a serious breach of these terms or where required by law.
  • After termination your data on our servers is deleted as described in our privacy policy. Data on your device stays until you delete it or uninstall the app.

17.Limitation of liability

We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under product liability law and wherever liability cannot be limited by law.

For slight negligence we are liable only for breaches of essential contractual obligations (obligations whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible and on which you may regularly rely), limited to the foreseeable damage typical for the contract.

Otherwise, our liability is excluded, including for decisions made on the basis of product information, ratings or reminders.

[JURISDICTION-SPECIFIC LIABILITY TERMS – TO BE REVIEWED BY COUNSEL FOR EACH TARGET MARKET.]

18.Governing law and place of jurisdiction

These terms are governed by the law of [GOVERNING LAW], excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of the country where you live.

19.Changes to these terms

We may change these terms for valid reasons, such as new features or changes in the law. We will inform you of material changes at least 30 days before they take effect. If you do not agree, you can cancel before the changes take effect; otherwise the new terms apply from that date.

20.General provisions

If any provision of these terms is invalid, the remaining provisions stay in force. These terms, together with the privacy policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about the service.
